Your hands have a lot to say! 🤟
Welcome to Sheffield Hallam's British Sign Language (BSL) Society!
Whether you've always wanted to learn BSL, you're interested in Deaf culture, or you just fancy trying something new and meeting some new people, we'd love to have you!
We're a student-led society bringing people together to learn and practise BSL in a relaxed, friendly environment. You don't need any previous experience, and there's no pressure to get everything right. We're all here to learn!
What do we get up to?
We'll be running regular BSL sessions where you can learn new signs, practise with others and build your confidence. We're also planning socials, activities and opportunities to get involved in campaigns promoting Deaf awareness, accessibility and inclusive communication.
We're particularly keen to encourage students going into healthcare, education and other people-focused careers to get involved. Being able to communicate with someone in their preferred language can make a massive difference, and we want to help more people understand that.
But you definitely don't need to be studying one of those subjects to join us!
Who can join?
Anyone! Whether you're Deaf, hard of hearing, hearing, completely new to BSL or already know a fair bit, you're more than welcome.
We want the society to be somewhere people feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, having a laugh and getting to know each other.
Why join?
Learning BSL is a brilliant skill to have, but it's also a chance to meet people you might not otherwise cross paths with, learn more about Deaf culture and help make communication a little more accessible for everyone.
We're a new society, so it's also a great opportunity to get involved from the beginning and help shape what we do!
If that sounds like something you'd enjoy, we'd love for you to join us.
Your hands have a lot to say, and communication shouldn't stop at words. 💙
