Students at Hallam University are rightly concerned about the coronavirus and the increase in cases now in the UK including at York University. The latest information on the virus can be found here. However, the coronavirus has also uncovered shocking levels of racism across the country and at times across UK campuses.
Hallam University is a global community, with international students from around the world, and we are immensely proud of our diverse community. Whilst these incidents are not related to Hallam, we are clear that any act of abuse or inflammatory hate speech, whether it occurs on campus, online or elsewhere will not be tolerated by Hallam University Students' Union.
Here at the Students' Union, we work closely with the University to prevent hate crime and support students who become victims of hate crime or incidents. The Students' Union Advice Centre is also a designated Hate Crime Reporting Centre.
Should anyone experience or witness abuse or inappropriate behaviour, including online posts, please report it to the University or via the Students' Union Advice Centre.
We encourage you to stand in solidarity and uphold the Students' Unions' values, which includes embracing diversity.
