Workshop: Committee Roles + Responsibilites (Tuesday 31st March)

We will be hosting this workshop again on March 31st

Topic: Different committee roles and responsibilities. This workshop will include explanations of the responsibilities of each role, different ways you can support the society, advice for taking on responsibilties, and what to expect. We will go over new roles you can add and nominate (if you want to)(such as social media officer, events coordinator), how to write a manifesto (aproximately 100-300 words), and a behind the scenes of what each week is like as a committee member. You can only nominate yourself (or vote) for a committee role if you have a current membership (officially, from the website). There will be activities and writing exercises for people to experience a taste of each role and practice writing a manifesto! We will also show everyone where to find information about elections and how to vote on the Student Union website. Feel free to invite friends from university if you think they might be interested! As long as you sign up for a membership on our society page before nominations open then you're eligible to nominate yourself.

The week after (Tuesday 10th March) will be our usual submission workshop. Please feel free to use submission workshops to get support and feedback for your manifesto.

Time Frame:

Nominations open: 16th March @ 9:00AM

Nominations close & Manifesto deadline: 16th April @ 11:59PM *You cannot run in the elections for any role if you do not submit a manifesto by the deadline

Voting opens: 20th April @ 9:00AM

Voting closes: 23rd April @ 11:59PM

Results announced: 24th April @ 3:00PM

If you are thinking about nominating yourself, you have until 16th March to prepare. The current society committee will support all nominees through the process and over summer until society starts. Next year, Leah McDermott, current President, will be in her final year. In order to focus more on final year, she has chosen not to run for any committee roles but will be a member of the society and available to support the new committee in their first year serving on the committee. Ezzie Bardrick, Harrison Hildrow, and Meg Short, will graduate this year, therefore will no longer be Hallam students. Because of this, they will also not be running for committee roles. If you want to see the Creative Writing Society still running next year, have a go at nominating yourself! Each society requires a President, Secretary and Treasurer in order to pass elections successfully and remain running.

Rules and regulations (from Student Union website)

1. A student's race, background, nationality, gender, or identity does not impact their ability to join a society or run as a candidate.

2. The students study year or duration of society membership does not matter. It also doesn't matter if they have been on the committee before.

3. A society is not allowed to introduce specifications to committee roles that might exclude, discourage, or be an advantage to a certain group of students.

4. Committee members must not endorse, influence, show favouritism, be against any candidates, or try to influence votes for or against any candidates.

5. Candidates are expected to conduct themselves in a mature manner. Poor treatment of other candidates or coercive behaviour aimed at getting votes is not acceptable and should be reported to the Union team.

Please note: Society memberships will be taken off sale during the voting period. It is your responsibility to ensure you hold the required membership to put yourself forward as a candidate and vote in the election.

Stuck In Writer's Block?

We provide meetings aimed at supporting writers and providing a network for writers to connect and share their work. Receiving feedback on your writing can be difficult to adjust to. In our society we aim to create a space for writers to receive feedback in workshops in a low risk environment. Gain experiencing editing your drafts and networking with creatives in the industry!

Weekly Rotation:

Week 1: Book Club - meet others with similar interests and discover new books!

Week 2: Writing Activities and Prompts - if you are stuck in a writer's block or want to experiment with different ideas, we have a range of writing activities to help you enhance your writing. Previous writing activities have involved character creation, writing scenes only of dialogue, and randomised prompts for poetry. We cater these activities across many forms of writing (poetry, script, novels/shorts, and comics) but if there's a form of writing we haven't engaged with yet, then we are more than happy to cater meet ups to requests.

Week 3: *Writing Workshops - receive feedback on your work and gain experience editing your drafts for publishing!

Week 4: Trip/Social/Industry Speaker - hear from writers and other creatives in the industry across film, games, animation and illustration, opportunities to receive advice about publishing from agents and editors. If we do not have a guest speaker booked in then we will host a free write, a trip (e.g. The Peak District, Grimm and Co. etc), or a social.

*No one is expected to workshop if they don't feel comfortable. We know sharing your writing can feel personal and potentially embarrassing, so take as much time as you need to settle in. Our aim is to create a space to build a writer's confidence so they can feel comfortable sharing work they are proud of.

You cannot access the Google Drive or take part in the workshops/meetings unless you have a membership. This is a measure to help protect against plagiarism of our members' work.

Society Members get 20% off all food and drink and The Beaten Track, 44-46 Campo Ln, S1 2DE

We hold meetings every Tuesday where you can choose to write either your own projects or using the prompts of the week, share ideas and stories and get advice off others, or use that time to socialise with the society. We hold workshops every two weeks, and a google drive is accessible to share your work on our Discord where you will also find the submission guidelines (word count etc.). Whether you want to discover unpublished authors at your university, share your work with other writers or simply want a creative space to work on any of your projects without having to worry about a deadline, grab your membership below!
