COVID support - FAQs

As a Students’ Union, we’re always here to support all Hallam students. As we begin the new academic year a little differently, we want to make sure that you get the best out of your university experience whilst keeping safe. We know that you’ve probably got lots of questions related to student support through COVID-19, so we’ve put together some FAQs that will hopefully answer your questions…


What is the Students’ Union doing to make sure students and staff are safe?

As the HUBS has now reopened, we have introduced some important COVID safety measures:

  1. Pre-booking is required to access our services
  2. Face masks or coverings must be worn by everyone within the building, unless you are exempt for medical reasons or seated within HiDEOUT
  3. Do not enter the building if you have COVID symptoms or have been asked to quarantine/self-isolate


What support is the Students’ Union providing for students who are self-isolating or who feel lonely?

We understand that self-isolating and not being able to get out as much can make lots of people feel lonely and anxious, especially students who are new to the city. If you’re struggling, we want you to know that you’re not alone and the Students’ Union is here to help. If you need support, please talk to us whether it’s making an appointment with your Student Officers or using our online chat service on our website, which is available Monday to Friday between 9am – 4pm.

If you need to talk to someone in the evening when most services are closed, the student-run support service, Sheffield Nightline, which is supported by Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union and Sheffield Students’ Union, provides advice and support to Sheffield students. Nightline is currently using an instant messaging service due to COVID-19, which is open between 8pm – 12am every night.


What events can I get involved in/things can I do to make new friends at uni during COVID-19?

Throughout semester 1, most of our events that we would usually run at the HUBS or within the city are now being held online, so you can still get involved if you’re self-isolating. We have a full calendar of events taking place in our What’s On guide on our website from online student socials, discussions with guest speakers and training workshops, and we also have a full programme of events in our digital Give It A Go guide from online society meet-ups, Zumba and socially-distanced trips in and around Sheffield. We also have a Corona Community Facebook page for all Hallam students which includes fun things you can do at home, tips and support, and is run by our Wellbeing, Sport and Physical Activity Officer, Hannah. Even though most of our events are online, you can still socialise, have fun and meet new friends. We have also put together a list of socially-distanced activities and events taking place around the city that you can get involved in.

Symptom free and with your bubble? Come into HiDEOUT, our Students’ Union bar, and relax! HiDEOUT has now reopened if you fancy some great food and drink at affordable prices. You don’t need to book to visit, all you need to do is just turn up in your bubble of up to 6 people and make sure you’re wearing a face mask or covering when you arrive.


What do I do if I need support with funding, accommodation or my studies due to COVID-19?

The Student Advice Centre at the Students’ Union is here to help you when things aren’t going to plan. We have a team of friendly and accredited advisers offering free, confidential and independent advice to all Hallam students. Throughout semester 1, the Student Advice Centre will be providing an online service only. Get in touch here
