Activities Officer

The Activities Officer supports the exciting groups and opportunities the Union has to offer. As Activities Officer, you'll look after Volunteering groups, Societies, student fundraising and the Media. You'll help new groups to set up, and make sure existing ones deliver the best opportunities to Hallam students.

Activities Officer

The Role:

The Activities Officer has the opportunity to enhance the student experience through developing and supporting extra-curricular activities available at Sheffield Hallam Students' Union.

The Activities Officer is responsible for:

  • Societies and student led activities
  • Volunteers and volunteering
  • Fundraising opportunities
  • Student Media

The Activities Officer acts as:

  • The lead officer for the promotion and development of societies and student led events and activities for the Students’ Union.
  • The lead officer to support volunteers at Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union.
  • A Trustee of the Students’ Union.

All the main duties and responsibilities of the Activities Officer include:

  • To attend Representative Committee, the Trustee Board, Students’ Union Council, Annual General Meeting and any other relevant meetings.
  • To ensure that all societies operate a model constitution in accordance with the policies of the Students’ Union, including financial procedures.
  • To encourage and promote student led events.
  • To be the lead officer for fundraising at Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union.
  • Any other duties and responsibilities as agreed with the Representative Committee.

Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Students' Rep

The BME Rep is the primary representative for Black and Minority Ethnic Students, and has the job of making sure the Union and University is more inclusive.

In this role you'll play a part in shaping and directing policy, and you'll run campaigns on issues relating to BME students, such as closing the attainment gap.

Disabled Students' Rep

As Disabled Students Rep, you'll be providing the voice for students at Hallam with a disability. You'll be working to make sure that the Union and the University do as much as they can to ensure their activities and services are accessible and inclusive. You'll campaign, set policy and work on projects throughout the institution.

Education Officer

This role does exactly what it says on the tin - as Education Officer you'd be representing students' academic interests within the University. You will work closely with a range of student groups to find out what issues they face in their academic life. From teaching to assessment, exam stress to study space, represent students to change and improve life at Sheffield Hallam.

The Education Officer is responsible for:

  • Representing the learner voice to the University, the local community and nationally.
  • NSS and student surveys.
  • QAA.
  • Employability.
  • Educational campaigns.
  • All education and academic matters that affect students including:

- Timetabling

- Placements

- Student reps/faculty reps

The Education Officer acts as:

  • The lead officer for local and national educational and academic issues within the Students’ Union and the University Community.
  • A Trustee of the Students’ Union.

All the main duties and responsibilities of the Education Officer include:

  • To attend meetings of the Trustee Board, Representative Committee, Students’ Union Council, Annual General Meeting, and any other relevant meetings.
  • To take the lead in promoting the learner voice to the University, the local community and nationally
  • To assist with the co-ordination and training of the student rep system.
  • To work with Advice Centre staff and student reps to support students with issues affecting their academic life.
  • To co-ordinate and publicise the Students’ Union’s priority campaigns on academic related matters.
  • To encourage student involvement and engagement throughout the University by liaising with faculties and departments.
  • To work alongside and in partnership with Academic Reps.
  • Any other reasonable duties and responsibilities as agreed with the Representative Committee.

You're the primary representative for students in your Faculty, helping to shape and influence the Union and the University and make sure it fits the needs of your students. You'll get the chance to lead on projects and campaigns, as well as sitting on high level meetings throughout the University.

Working with Course and Department Reps, you'll ensure that students in Development and Society have a voice within the Students' Union and the University. As a full member of rep committee and Union Council, you'll have a budget to run events and campaigns that benefit students in your Faculty and play a part in cross organisational campaigns.

The Postgraduate Students Rep works with Full Time Officers to make sure the Students' Union and the University provide a brilliant experience to our 7,000 postgraduate students.

The President leads the Students' Union, making sure students have the best possible time at University. As well as leading the officer team, the President sits on the highest governing boards of the University, and makes sure the student voice is heard.

The Role:

The President is the leader of Sheffield Hallam Students' Union. They sit on the highest governing boards within the university and have a real opportunity to affect change.

The President is responsible for:

  • Student representation within the student body, to the University and to various local and national bodies.
  • Leading the Elected Officer Team and Students’ Union Reps to ensure the delivery of their objectives.
  • Co-ordinating the work of Elected Officers and the Representative Committee.
  • Ensuring accountability of The Representative Committee to the Students’ Union Council.
  • Ensuring accountability of the Zone Committees and the Zones to the Students’ Union Council:

The President acts as:

  • Trustee of the Students’ Union and Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees.
  • The lead officer for the development, implementation and monitoring of the Students’ Union’s strategic and financial plans.
  • The main point of contact for:

- The University and Board of Governors

- NUS

- The community

- The media

All the main duties and responsibilities of the President include:

  • To attend meetings of the Trustee Board, Representative Committee, Students’ Union Council, Annual General Meeting, and any other relevant meetings.
  • To act as Chair of Representative Committee.
  • To ensure that the requirements of these Articles of Governance are upheld and to bring recommendations to the Students’ Union Council for ensuring that both these Articles of Governance and all Policies are up to date.
  • To be the lead officer on the development, implementation and monitoring of the Students’ Union’s strategic plans.
  • To head the delegation from the Students’ Union to Annual and Extraordinary NUS Conferences, and to nominate a delegate leader for other conferences as appropriate.
  • To agree and monitor individual objectives and identify training needs with Elected Officers
  • To take responsibility for the running of any Students’ Union priority campaign not undertaken by any other member of the Representative Committee.
  • Any other reasonable duties and responsibilities as agreed with the Representative Committee.

Sports and Physical Activities Officer

The Sports and Physical Activities Officer is the student representative for all Sheffield Hallam sports clubs and individuals. They lead the many sports groups on campus, and oversee the delivery of major sporting events such as Varsity - including the 8,000 attendee Ice Hockey finale.

As well as being a key member of all sporting decision making within the university you will also be overseeing the delivery of major sporting events and campaigns such as Varsity.

The Sports & Physical Activity Officer acts as:

  • The lead officer for the promotion and development of sporting opportunities for students
  • The lead officer for the development and implementation of the Students’ Union’s sports strategy
  • A Trustee of the Students’ Union

All the main duties and responsibilities of the Sports & Physical Activity Officer include:

  • To attend meetings of the Representative Committee, the Trustee Board, Students’ Union Council, Annual General Meeting and any other relevant meetings.
  • To be the lead officer for Varsity for the Students’ Union
  • To promote the development, coordination and training of clubs
  • To ensure that all Sports activities operate in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Students’ Union
  • To ensure that all clubs operate a model constitution in accordance with the policies of the Students’ Union including financial procedures
  • To ensure the effective organisation of British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) fixtures and any other student competitions
  • Any other reasonable duties and responsibilities as agreed with the Representative Committee

Union Council is the highest decision making body in the Students' Union. As Union Council Chair, you lead on the implementation and delivery of all policy within the Union.

As Union Council Chair, you will hold elected officers and representatives to account and ensure the Union delivers on its policy commitments. You will chair meetings of the Students' Unions highest decision making body, and will be a key member of the representative team.

Welfare and Community Officer

The Welfare and Community Officer is there to make sure students feel safe, supported and part of a community while studying at Sheffield Hallam University. They lead on campaigns around issues as diverse as housing, student finance and health and work on projects with the University and the Council.
