We've got some big news for students commuting on trams!

Through ongoing work by the Sheffield Students' Assembly, a partnership between Hallam SU and Sheffield SU, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has officially launched a brand-new 7-day student Supertram pass for £16.

The new ticket is now live and available to purchase on board Supertram or via the Travel South Yorkshire (TSY) app.

The work doesn't stop. Hallam SU has launched the South Yorkshire Student Transport Survey and is asking any student in higher education across South Yorkshire to complete it. The findings will be shared with SYMCA and will inform future transport pricing and routes across the region.

Every respondent will be entered into a prize draw and five students will be reimbursed up to £30 worth of public transport travel expenses to Uni, whether that's bus, tram, or train.

What students save

This new weekly pass helps bridge the gap for students studying flexibly or on campus a few days a week, offering significant savings compared to standard adult fares:

  • 7-Day Student Pass: £16 (Adult price: £20) - Save £4 a week / over £17 a month
  • 28-Day Student Pass: £47.30 (Adult price: £60.90 - available via the TSY app) - Save £3.40 a week / almost £15 a month

"I'm thrilled to see student voice directly shaping the way our city operates. This tram pass is a huge win, and it proves that when students speak up together, local decision-makers listen. Our partnership with SYMCA through the Sheffield Students' Assembly shows just how much impact we can have when we collaborate across the city."

- Ebuka Obi, Hallam SU President

"This is a fantastic win for students in Sheffield and shows the results we can get when we come together to amplify student voices across the city. With cost of living a constant challenge for students, adding flexibility to transport costs is a huge help. Thank you to all of the students who showed up to share your testimonies and experiences at Sheffield Students' Assemblies, your voices have made a real difference."

- Anna James, Sustainability and Development Officer, Sheffield Students' Union

Driving change for student travel

While our goal remains securing dedicated student single and day fares to better suit flexible and part-time schedules, this weekly ticket is a hugely positive step forward. It shows decision-makers are actively listening to student feedback raised through our meetings and Students' Assembly activity.

What's next?

We're not stopping there! The Sheffield Students' Assembly will continue working directly with SYMCA to help shape the future of South Yorkshire's combined bus and tram network.
