Students' Union Advice Centre passes highest assessment standard

The Student Advice Centre at Sheffield Hallam Students' Union has once again passed the Advice Quality Standard (AQS) assessment.

AQS is the quality mark awarded to services that deliver social welfare legal advice. Every two years, the Advice Centre undergoes a rigorous assessment process in which AQS require evidence that successfully shows how the Advice Centre has provided a high level of service to Hallam students.

A significant number of Areas of Good Practice were identified during the assessment, highlighting where the organisation has exceeded the Standard and has developed an innovative approach to service delivery.

Maddy Parkinson, Head of Advice and Wellbeing, at Sheffield Hallam Students' Union, said: "The Student Advice Centre team and I are absolutely thrilled that we have again passed the AQS assessment. Our students are often faced with a lot of new challenges which can be quite overwhelming. This is why we are fully committed to helping students, and holding the AQS accreditation shows that we offer free, confidential, high quality advice."

The Student Advice Centre helps students with a range of issues such as course funding, housing, academic problems and health and wellbeing, and is totally independent from the University. The Advice Centre has supported over a thousand clients in the last academic year with complex cases and enquiries, plus a thousand more with general information and signposting.  It has also won over £290,000 in funding and benefits for students.

In addition, the Student Advice Centre also offers self-help resources through the Students' Union website, where students can find information without having to make an appointment with an adviser.

Sheriff Muhammed, President of Sheffield Hallam Students' Union, said: "The Student Advice Centre is just one of the ways we can support students during their time at University and we are all very pleased with the outcome of the assessment. I would like to say a big well done and thank you to everyone at the Student Advice Centre for all of their hard work."

For any Hallam students who require advice, the Student Advice Centre is located at The HUBS at Sheffield Hallam Students' Union (and will also be back at Collegiate from late January). Students can get in touch by dropping into the Student Advice Centre or by visiting hallamstudentsunion.com/advice_help/contactus.
