Pride - how you can get involved

From attending a Pride festival to supporting LGBTQ+ artists, here is a list of ways that you can get involved this Pride month…

Learn about the history of Pride

Do you know why we celebrate Pride month, and why it's celebrated in June? Spend some time learning about the history of Pride, and what it means.

Here are some key facts for you:

  • Pride is celebrated in June as it's the month that commemorates the Stonewall riots, an incident where the NYC police raided a well-known gay bar.

  • Every colour of the LGBTQ+ flag has a different meaning: red symbolises life, orange symbolises healing, yellow symbolises sunlight, green symbolises nature, blue symbolises harmony, and violet symbolises spirit.

  • Brenda Howard is known as the "Mother of Pride". She was the person to organise the first ever Liberation March, exactly one year after the attack. She came up with the idea to hold a week-long festival event filled with parades and rallies. The celebrations have been carried on ever since.

Attend a Pride event

You don't have to be part of the LGBTQ+ community to attend Pride events, so why not get involved? Throughout June, and even July, there are many events from festivals and parades to smaller, local gatherings all celebrating Pride. Find events near you

If you're unable to attend an event in person don't worry, there are plenty of virtual Pride events happening this month too!

Volunteer or donate

Want to get involved without attending the big events? Why not give back to the community through volunteering virtually, or in person, or even donate to charities or support local LGBTQ+ youth or community centres? Find relevant charities

Become an advocate

If your place of work, education or society doesn't yet have an LGBTQ+ advocate, then you could create the position and make your community a safe one for all.

Support LGBTQ+ culture

During Pride, something many people enjoy is art and culture. The arts associated with the culture are vibrate and influential, and throughout the month of June there will be many LGBT themed shows taking place, whether at the theatre, or on Netflix. Queer Eye and Sex Education are just a couple of series on Netflix you can watch, and why not listen to some LGBTQ+ themed podcasts? Spotify have a great selection of podcasts you can listen to on the go or even on a chilled evening at home. Explore LGBTQ+ TV shows or top 10 LGBTQ+ podcasts.
