When should I start looking for somewhere to live?

Landlords usually start advertising student properties from December (sometimes even earlier!), ready for the following September. However, we recommend you wait until after the Christmas break before signing a tenancy agreement for your next academic year.

Don't believe the myth that there's a shortage of student housing in Sheffield - it's not true! There's more than enough good quality student accommodation in Sheffield, so make sure you take the time to visit a variety of properties.

Tenancy agreements are legally binding, so don't feel pressured or rushed into signing a contract until you're happy that you understand the contract you are entering into. Where should I look for housing?

There are a few different ways to find student accommodation in Sheffield.

Come to our next Housing Fair (date TBC) to meet landlords and agents and see what properties they've got on offer. All advertised properties will be 'Snug' approved.

Outside of the Housing Fair, we recommend that the safest way to find accommodation is via SHU Accommodation Services.

They offer four types of accommodation:

• University managed halls of residence
• University partnership residences
• Private sector housing
• Homestays or accommodation with a family

All properties advertised with SHU Accommodation Services are Snug registered.

Which areas are popular with students?

The areas closest to Sheffield Hallam and popular with students are typically within a 25-30 minute walk. These include Broomhall, Sharrow, Ecclesall Road, Hunters Bar, Bramall Lane, Norfolk Park, and Kelham Island.

What is Snug?

Snug is an award winning student landlord accommodation scheme which is managed by Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Hallam University, us (Hallam Students' Union), University of Sheffield, and Sheffield Students' Union. Snug was set up to ensure students get high quality, properly managed accommodation, so their time in Sheffield is both safe and enjoyable. We strongly recommend choosing a Snug property.

Landlords that do not meet the criteria set by the council will not qualify for the scheme, and will not be able to advertise with the University or us.
