You must register to vote to be able to have your say in UK elections.

If you're not registered, you can't vote. It's as simple as that.

Eligibility

Most of our students are eligible to vote. You must be over the age of 18 and be one of the following:

  • a British citizen
  • an Irish or EU citizen living in the UK
  • a Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission (this is relevant to most of our international students!)
  • a citizen of another country living in Scotland or Wales who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission

Unsure if you're eligible? Check which elections you're eligible to vote in.

Register online

You may have registered to vote when you enrolled at Sheffield Hallam University as part of a collaboration between the University and Sheffield City Council to remove barriers for students voting. If you haven't registered yet, you can register online - it only takes 5 minutes!

You’ll need your National Insurance number to register, but you can still register if you do not have one.

Unsure if you're registered?

If you think you're registered to vote but you're not sure, you can contact the Sheffield Electoral Registration Office at elections@sheffield.gov.uk or 0114 273 4093 to find out. If you aren't based in Sheffield, you can find your local office by searching your postcode.

Remember, you can be registered to vote at both your home and term time address!

If you're registered at both your home and term time address, you can only vote at one address in UK general elections, but you can choose which area to vote in. It's against the law to vote more than once in the same general election. In local council elections, you'll be able vote at both addresses as long as you're voting in different council areas.
