"Volunteering as a Student can create a massive impact in your local community and provides an opportunity for you to make changes to the issues you care about."

Make friends, explore Sheffield and make positive change in your local community with one of our many Volunteering Opportunities.

Your Students' Union offers a wide range of fulfilling and developmental volunteering opportunities that put you in the heart of your community. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, take care of your wellbeing and enhance your CV - all whilst experiencing something new and having fun!

How to get involved

If you would like to find out about the volunteering opportunities we have then the first step is to book an informal chat with us. An informal chat is the perfect way for us to get to know what you're interested in so we can match you up with a volunteering opportunity to suit you! You can do this by following the link here Book an informal chat with one of our Volunteering Coordinators.

We are regularly at Collegiate on Mondays but if this time doesn't work for you just send us an email! If you have any queries, drop us a line at volunteering@shu.ac.uk. We look forward to hearing from you!

During your informal chat we will introduce you to our three key areas of work:

Give it A Go Volunteering

If getting involved in something more long term isn't for you right now, or you just want to dip your toe in then check out all the One-Off opportunities you can sign up to - with no regular commitment!

Student Projects

If you are wanting to get involved in something for the duration of your time here at Hallam, then a Student Project could be the perfect Volunteering Opportunity for you. You can become a member of one of the projects below or you can even start your own project. Book in an informal chat with one of our Volunteering team to get started.

Community Action

Want to make a difference in your local community? We are the one stop shop for enabling you to be right at the heart of your community during your time at University. We have a list of opportunities below for you to get involved in and some great contacts with local charities. Our Volunteering Coordinator has been out and about to make sure that the opportunities we offer are exactly what our students are looking for. If you are interested in Volunteering for a local charity or community project make sure to book an informal chat with one of the team to get started.

Since 2018 we have been partnering with Voluntary Action Sheffield to provide our students with the best volunteering opportunities from across the city. For over 90 years Voluntary Action Sheffield (vas) has improved the quality of life for all of Sheffield’s communities by supporting voluntary and community action in the city. Click here to search Volunteering opportunities with Local Charities. You can apply for these roles through the Voluntary Action Sheffield's website, if you would like any help with your application, or finding your perfect Volunteering role book in for an informal chat.

Don't forget that if you are volunteering for a charity you can log your hours on your Volunteering Profile and achieve our awards as well as attend any socials and celebration evenings that we hold.

Lastly, keep us updated with how you get on - we love to hear your stories!

Information for Organisations

Looking to recruit volunteers? Click here to see how we can help.

We are now partnered with Voluntary Action Sheffield (VAS) and encourage all organisations looking to recruit Sheffield Hallam University student volunteers to register their volunteer opportunities with them.

We promote all external opportunities to Sheffield Hallam University students. We run Volunteering Fairs in partnership with Voluntary Action Sheffield which we encourage students to attend. Your opportunities will also be promoted through lecture shout-outs, social media channels and direct mail-outs. We are an open office and students regularly drop in to find out more about volunteering and what is on offer in the city.

If your proposed activity does not run on a regular basis, you will only need to complete a 'One-Off Activity Proposal' form which is available below. Please send completed forms directly to us at volunteering@shu.ac.uk. Our One-Off Programme is perfect for recruiting volunteers for single events or community projects which our students can turn up to on the day without extensive training.
