Vetiver

Vetiver is the long-running stage and recording name of San Francisco's Andy Cabic. 'Up On High' is his seventh studio album and the first since 2015. Vetiver has toured around the world on headline tours and supporting artists that include Wilco, The Shins, Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Bob Weir & Phil Lesh, and Vashti Bunyan. Vetiver craft nuanced, understated songs that reward careful listening, building a rich duality; a space where sunshine is only a chord away from melancholy, an introspective lyric underlies an extroverted chorus and subtlety tries to be outgoing in an effort to connect the dots of life’s ellipsis.

Andy Cabic’s musical being is, like many curious 21st century musicians, shaped and sustained by divergent tangents. If he’s not crafting a melancholy folk rock diamond in his Northern California studio, he’s moving a dance floor with bossa nova and house DJ sets, or helping curate a compilation of Japanese City Pop.

What’s magic about this new Vetiver LP Up On High is the way these tangents colour the ten songs without undermining a distinct move to more elemental, spacious and natural arrangements. At the heart of each of these ten songs is Cabic’s voice: sweet, tender and weathered - a welcome and soothing old friend if ever there was one. There are other familiar friends: the album also features longtime engineer and collaborator Thom Monahan and the same resourceful and versatile band that helped Cabic make the more dense and layered Complete Strangers from 2015.

Crooked Weather

“Crooked Weather come from the same fertile ground which gave the world David Crosby’s immortal If I Could Only Remember My Name. They are indie meets World music meets traditional British folk. Think a contemporary Incredible String Band with a 21st century mindset.” - Sid Griffin (The Coal Porters/Bob Dylan Biographer)

Based in East-Yorkshire, Crooked Weather play earthy, unruly and original folk songs. The sound is lead by carefully crafted lyrics delivered by the lilting harmonies of Holly and Will. These songs echo the ethos of folk songsmiths before them with imagery of escape, adventure, companionship and inner searching, but told from a different heart.
