Moving to a new country can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to healthcare.
But don’t worry! This guide explains how to access medical support while studying at Sheffield Hallam University, so you know where to go and what to do if you feel unwell.
1. How healthcare works in the UK
Most medical care in the UK is provided by the National Health Service (NHS), which offers a wide range of free or low-cost services. As an international student, you’ll usually be entitled to NHS healthcare if you’re studying for 6 months or more and paid the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of your visa application.
2. Registering with a doctor (GP)
Once you arrive in Sheffield, it's important to register with a GP (General Practitioner) as soon as possible - don’t wait until you’re sick.
How to register:
- Attend the registration session organised by the International Experience Team during your first week.
- If you miss it, register yourself online or in person with a local GP.
- Take your passport, SHUcard, and proof of UK address (such as a tenancy agreement).

3. What to do if you’re ill or injured
Non-Emergency (GP or NHS 111)
- For general health concerns, contact your GP surgery for an appointment.
- You can also call NHS 111 (free, 24/7) for advice on where to go and what to do.

Emergency (Call 999 or go to A&E)
4. Getting prescriptions and medication
- Prescriptions in England typically cost £9.90 per item (as of 2025).
- You’ll receive a prescription from your GP, which you can take to any pharmacy or chemist (Boots, Lloyds, etc.).
- Over-the-counter medicine (like paracetamol, cold/flu relief) can be bought without a prescription.
5. Mental Health and Wellbeing
It’s just as important to take care of your mental health.
Support Services:
- Hallam Wellbeing - Free counselling and support sessions.
- Togetherall - A free 24/7 online mental health platform for students.
- Samaritans – Confidential listening service. Call 116 123 any time.
6. Dental and Eye Care
Dentists:
- NHS dentists offer subsidised treatment, but not all accept new NHS patients.
- Register early if possible and ask if they’re accepting NHS patients.
