HSU Orchestra are a non-auditioned group and welcomes anyone who plays any woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instrument! It doesn’t matter what experience you have playing - whether you are new to music, play regularly or haven't picked up your instrument in years - we accommodate a range of different abilities. Social Society of the Year 2023
At the Societies Awards Ball 2023, HSU Orchestra (SHSU Band at the time) was awarded Social Society of the Year.

Rehearsals
Our rehearsals are held every Thursday 6:45 - 9pm in Hallam Students' Union - Owen, accessed via Hallam Square, and are run and organised by the committee as well as our fantastic conductor, Jamie, who has been a core part of our society for many years now. We start playing promptly at 7pm, so please arrive from 6:45pm with plenty of time to set up your instrument, have a catch-up with other members and get your music ready.
Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice Charity Showcase 2026
Performances
We host a range of different performance opportunities throughout the academic year. Our first and longest-running concert is held at Kelham Island Museum's Victorian Christmas Market, where we bring out the most loved Christmas tunes as well as some all-time favourites, such as Doctor Who and How to Train Your Dragon. We also host our own Christmas concert for our family and friends! We often support local charities such as Weston Park Cancer Charity with additional small performances around the Christmas period and aim for a larger-scale charity performance during Semester 2. At the end of the year, we hold a small concert for friends and family to showcase everything we have achieved.
Last year’s charity showcase raised £322.10 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and saw many alumni members travel across the country to return and play with us for this special event!

Socials
For those who wish to get to know each other better, make some great friends or just have some fun, we hold socials outside of our rehearsals. In the past, these have included bowling, escape rooms, pantomimes, laser quests, Ninja Warrior, and much more!
