Site Gallery Front of House Volunteer

Ongoing

Front of House volunteers are the face of Site Gallery. You will greet visitors, start conversations about our exhibitions, answer questions about the building and what's on, and look after our shop. Most of your shift is spent talking to people, so we're looking for someone who is happy in a people-facing environment. The welcome you give shapes whether visitors come back, and shop sales help fund our work, from youth groups to exhibitions. You'll build confidence in talking about contemporary art and in starting conversations with all kinds of people, and you'll learn merchandising, stock management and selling. We'll also train you on how a gallery operates commercially, with support on employability along the way. No previous experience is needed.

Age 18+

We offer up to £5 food/drink and £5 travel expenses per shift, which is usually 3 or 6 hours Tuesdays-Sundays

Overview of Project

Site Gallery is a contemporary art gallery and charity in the centre of Sheffield. We show ambitious exhibitions and invest in artists who are underrepresented in the sector. We also run programmes for young people and work with Sheffield's diverse communities. Alongside the galleries we have a shop and a café, and our spaces are available to hire. Volunteers are central to how we welcome visitors, and our Front of House team is often the first person someone meets here.

This Role Involves

Front of House volunteers are the face of Site Gallery. You will greet everyone who comes through the door, start conversations about our exhibitions, answer questions about the building and what's on, and look after our shop, helping visitors find something they'll enjoy. Most of your shift is spent chatting to people, so we're looking for someone who thrives in a people-facing environment. We have really been working hard on developing our gallery shop. We'll train you in merchandising and stock management, so you'll help keep the displays fresh, check stock levels and learn how a (pretty tiny!) gallery shop is run. Any feedback you hear on the new stock from visitors is incredibly important to us. You don't need any previous experience, and we'll train you in person before you start. If you're still building your confidence that's no problem. You'll work alongside experienced volunteers and staff and take on more as you go. How it helps people: Site Gallery is a charity, and the welcome visitors get shapes whether they come back. You are the difference between someone wandering past an exhibition and someone seeing something that sticks in their mind all year. Our shop sales fund all of our activity from our youth groups to our exhibitions. What you can develop: - Talking about contemporary art and the gallery's work with confidence - Starting conversations with all kinds of visitors and adapting your approach to each - Merchandising and stock management, including how we work with artists on shop stock - Recommending and selling products - Working as part of a team and handling busy or unexpected moments calmly - How a gallery like ours operates commercially, with training on venue hires - Meeting artists and staff, with support on employability, such as CV help and skills sharing from across the gallery team These skills carry over to retail, events, venue management, customer service, sales and any role where you represent an organisation to the public.

Skills/Experience Required

You don't need any previous experience, but we're looking for someone who: - Is comfortable greeting people they haven't met and happy to start a conversation - Is warm, approachable and good at making people feel welcome - Is curious about contemporary art, and willing to learn about our exhibitions and talk about them with visitors - Can stay calm and friendly when it's busy or something unexpected comes up - Is reliable and works well as part of a team - Is willing to learn, including how to run a small shop Experience in retail, hospitality, customer service or events is useful, but it isn't essential. We'll train you in everything else.

Benefits to Others

A warm welcome makes a gallery feel open to everyone, including people who have never visited one before. Volunteers are often the reason a first-time visitor stays, asks a question and comes back. Shop sales help fund our work, from youth groups to exhibitions, and put money directly into the pockets of the artists we work with. Volunteers also keep the gallery open and accessible to the public, which is part of what makes it a space for Sheffield's communities.

Benefits to the Volunteer

Volunteers build practical skills in conversation, retail and gallery operations that carry over to a wide range of jobs. We support employability directly, with CV help, skills sharing across the gallery team and chances to learn from colleagues in areas like programming and events. Many volunteers tell us they've gained confidence and made friends, and the role gives people a chance to engage closely with contemporary art, meet artists and be part of a team. We have a really good track record of helping people secure fulfilling job roles and signposting to resources.
