Cemetery Event Steward

This opportunity is ongoing, with no end date.

To meet and welcome attendees at our Events and show them the way to and from the Samuel Worth Chapel within the Cemetery.

Sheffield General Cemetery is a valuable green space in the heart of the City. Our site is of unique historical importance, contains 87,000 burials, is a haven for wildlife and a tranquil place for all to enjoy. Being able to hire out the Grade II* listed Non-Conformist chapel in the heart of the cemetery, as well as our Airbnb beautiful Grade II* gatehouse flat is bringing in income which enables us to support the conservation and heritage work done by our volunteers who work in partnership with the city council.  We are a registered charity and company run by a board of Trustees.
There are lots of different events taking place at Sheffield General Cemetery throughout the year. The Samuel Worth Chapel is a great unique space in the centre of the Cemetery where varied events take place. These include exhibitions, post punk music nights, films, children's craft activities, poetry readings, recitals by choirs, weddings, history and heritage talks. We also hold conservation events within the Cemetery.

Stewarding at our evening events is an important role at the Cemetery as it ensures that attendees are not only welcomed but give them the reassurance when walking to the Chapel in the Evening. Ideally you would live locally so you could go home when the event starts and come back later to show the way again back to Cemetery Road. This is a wonderful opportunity to build confidence and develop interpersonnel skills.

Overview of Project

The Sheffield General Cemetery Trust was established in 2005 from the Friends of the Sheffield General Cemetery group. It purchased the lease for the Gatehouse Complex and Samuel Worth Chapel and they aim to develop and secure for the long term benefit of the public the conservation, repair and maintenance of the Gatehouse and redundant Non-conformist Chapel within the General Cemetery, Sharrow, together with the associated burial grounds, monuments, structures, habitats and curtilages as a historical, environmental and educational amenity
