If you paid a Student or Child Student visa fee from outside the UK between Autumn 2023 and April 2026, you may be able to request a partial refund from the Home Office.

The House of Lords Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee (SLSC) found UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) had been charging international students more than the law allowed. The official legal price of the visa should have stayed at £363.

Check your payment dates to see exactly how much you may have been overcharged.

When you paid What you were charged Amount overcharged
Autumn 2023 - March 2025 £490 £127
March 2025 - 8 April 2026 £524 £161

How to request your refund

You can submit a refund request to the Home Office up to five years after your visa payment, meaning you may still be eligible after graduating or leaving the UK.

1. Find your original visa paperwork or emails

You need to find your GWF number or your Unique Application Number (UAN). Look for these on your visa decision letter, your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) emails, or the receipt UKVI sent you when you paid.

2. Write a short refund request

State that you were overcharged due to the Home Office fee error flagged by parliament. Make sure you include your full name, date of birth, nationality, and your GWF or UAN reference number. State the exact amount (£127 or £161) you are asking for.

3. Submit to the UKVI Refunds Team

Send your request to the contact details or email address listed on your original visa letters. If you can't find one, log on to the official GOV.UK website, search for the UKVI contact portal, and send it through their online form. Address it clearly to the UK Visas and Immigration Refunds Team.

4. Keep a copy of everything

Save a PDF copy of the letter you sent and take a screenshot of your submission confirmation. The Home Office can take a long time to reply, so you need proof that you sent it if you have to chase them up later.

What happens next?

Requests are likely to be rejected. If this happens, you can write to your MP to raise the issue.
