They campaigned. You voted. The results are in. It's time to meet your 2026/27 Officer team.
That's a wrap on the HSU Officer Elections 2026.
This year, we had an amazing group of candidates vying for a spot on the 2026/27 Officer team. Competition was fierce, but only 6 candidates could emerge victorious!
After a tense results night on Friday 13 March, we're excited to announce your newly elected HSU Officer team...
Congratulations to the new team and a massive thank you to all candidates for your dedication and enthusiasm throughout the Election process.
Thank you also to every student who got involved and used their vote - you helped us secure a whopping 31 trees to plant in the Peak District! Keep an eye out for progress on our tree planting initiative.
Our voting system
Our Election uses the 'Single Transferrable Vote' system.
How our voting system works
The 'Single Transferrable Vote' system means voters can rank candidates in order of preference - so their favourite candidate as #1, their second favourite candidate as #2, and so on.
Each voter only gets one vote, and everybody's vote is worth the same, but votes can be 'transferred' during the count.
Quota: If a candidate passes the quota of votes, they are elected. In an election where only one person is elected, the quota is 50%.
Stages: This is the process for each stage of the vote:
- Check to see if any candidate has passed the quota of votes needed to be elected. If one has, they are elected.
- If none of the candidates have passed the quota of votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is excluded.
- Check the votes for the excluded candidate - if these votes rank additional candidates, then transfer the vote to the next listed candidate preference. If there are no further ranked candidates, the vote is no longer counted (this number is listed under 'Non-Transferable Differences').
- For example, if someone votes for Candidate A as their #1 preference, and Candidate B as their #2 preference, and Candidate A is excluded, this person's vote now goes to Candidate B. If Candidate B is excluded, this person's vote is no longer counted.
- Repeat these steps until either a candidate passes the quota, or there is only one candidate left.
Candidate budgets
Copies of candidate budgets are open for scrutiny by Hallam students on request at Hallam SU - Owen, from Monday 16 March.
*Please note: These results are provisional and will be confirmed in full as soon as possible after Thursday 19 March, 4pm.
