Your mental wellbeing matters and at Hallam Students’ Union, we’re here to make sure you don’t face things alone.
Whether you're exploring your identity, navigating difficult conversations, or just feeling overwhelmed, there’s support out there that understands the experiences of LGBTQ+ students.
1. We're here for you
At the SU, we understand that being LGBTQ+ can come with additional pressures, from dealing with discrimination or isolation, to finding safe spaces to be yourself.
Our role is to support you, connect you with the right resources, and advocate for inclusive, affirming mental health services.
2. Support when you need it:
Peer support and representation
Our LGBTQ+ society is run by students, for students and it’s a great way to connect with others who understand your experiences. They run campaigns, host socials, and work to make Hallam a safer, more inclusive space.
Wellbeing services
Need someone to talk to or not sure where to turn? Hallam’s wellbeing service offers free, confidential, and independent support. They can help you understand your options and access the right help for your mental health.
3. Crisis support
If you’re struggling with your mental health and need urgent help, please contact one of the following services:
- In an Emergency - Call 999 or visit A&E for life-threatening emergencies. Northern General Hospital is the nearest A&E department to the university.
- Urgent, but not life-threatening - phone NHS 111 and select option 2 to talk about mental health, available 24 hours.
4. Alcohol, drugs and chemsex: help without judgement
Some LGBTQ+ students may turn to alcohol, drugs, or sex as a way to cope with stress, trauma, or loneliness. You’re not alone, and there is no shame in seeking support.
If you're struggling with alcohol or drug use, involved in chemsex, or just want someone to talk to about how you're feeling, non-judgmental help is available.
What is chemsex?
Chemsex refers to using drugs like meth, GHB/GBL, or mephedrone during sex. It can affect your physical and mental health, and it’s OK to reach out if you’re concerned about how it’s impacting you.
5. You deserve to feel seen, supported, and safe
Whoever you are and whatever you’re facing, you deserve care that respects your identity and lived experiences. There is no issue too big or too small to talk about.
If you’re finding things tough, don’t wait. Reach out. You're not alone.
