Legal Support and Rights

Find out what support is available to you as an LGBTQ+ student at Hallam, your rights within the University, and where to get help if you need it.

As an LGBTQ+ student at Sheffield Hallam University, you are supported by a robust network of services and policies designed to protect your rights, ensure your wellbeing, and encourage an inclusive academic environment. Here's a comprehensive guide to the legal support and rights available to you:

1. Protection from discrimination

Under the Equality Act 2010, you are protected from discrimination based on sexual orientation. While the legal landscape around gender identity is currently under review following a recent UK Supreme Court ruling, Sheffield Hallam remains committed to creating an inclusive and respectful environment for all.

Experiencing discrimination or harassment?

Discrimination, harassment or victimisation is not tolerated. If you’ve experienced or witnessed any incidents:

  • Report and Support - Report anonymously or with your details and access specialist support.
  • Wellbeing Services - If this is affecting your studies or mental health, Hallam’s Student Wellbeing team is here to support you.
  • SU Advice Centre - Get free, confidential advice and support on your rights and options.

(Additionally, national organisations like Stonewall offer resources and support for LGBTQ+ individuals facing discrimination.)

2. Changing your name and gender marker

Sheffield Hallam University supports your right to self-identify.

If you would like to update your name, gender marker, title, or pronouns, the University is here to help you through that process.

  • Name and gender marker changes: You’ll need to provide supporting documentation, such as a deed poll, GP letter, solicitor letter, or marriage certificate.

  • Pronoun and title changes: You can update your pronouns directly in Blackboard and let the University know your preferences.

Once your details have been updated, a new student ID card can be issued, and changes will be reflected across University platforms like Blackboard and Google.

For personalised advice, especially about changing your gender marker or title, please contact Student Data Protection at studentdataprotection@shu.ac.uk.

4. A note on legal developments:

Sheffield Hallam University has posted the following message in response to the recent Supreme Court gender ruling:

“We understand that the recent Supreme Court gender ruling may be causing a range of emotions and raising questions within our community.

We want to assure all students that the University is closely following the situation and is in direct contact with the Equality, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (EEDI) team and senior leadership at Sheffield Hallam. Our aim, working with the EEDI team, is to communicate the implications of this decision for our existing policies and determine the best way forward to continue fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.

If this is impacting your wellbeing or studies, there are resources available to support you. Hallam Help can assist you in accessing appropriate support.”
