University is a time for excitement and self-discovery, stepping out on your own to forge new and important relationships. Here at the Students’ Union, we want you to feel safe, supported and comfortable with these new experiences, and also to know that we will be able to point you in the right direction should you ever need any advice or guidance.

  • Sex is your choice and your choices need to be accepted by others. We want to ensure that you are not judged for how you choose to have sex, regardless of your sexual orientation, choice of sexual partner or lifestyle
  • Remember that protection against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), viruses and other infections is a priority for yourself and your partner. Make sure that when you are having sex, you are doing so as safely as possible
  • You should be free to live without persecution, abuse (whether physical, emotional or psychological) or exploitation for your sexual choices
  • It is important to be aware as an individual of different methods of contraception – it is not your partner’s responsibility to prevent unwanted pregnancies

Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union has partnered with Sexual Health Sheffield to hold a sexual health drop-in service as part of our fortnightly “Welfare Thursday” initiative. This free, confidential service is here to provide you with information, advice and support from trained sexual-health experts, and offers services such as STI testing, HIV and pregnancy testing and advice around relationships and sexuality.

As a Students’ Union, we aim to achieve a strong sexual health consciousness amongst our students, challenging some of the stigmas associated with sexuality and sexual health, and ensuring that students understand the importance of how good sexual health can help develop healthy lifestyles.
