We know that university can often be stressful at times, with coursework, deadlines and exams adding to other demands outside of the classroom. A small amount of stress is normal to everyday life, but unmanageable stress and anxiety can be unhealthy, both physically and psychologically. It’s important to seek help if you’re unable to control your worries and stress is impacting your daily life.

Stress and anxiety can produce both physical and psychological symptoms. People experience stress and anxiety differently. Common physical symptoms include:

  • Stomach ache
  • muscle tension
  • headache
  • rapid breathing
  • fast heartbeat
  • sweating
  • shaking
  • dizziness
  • change in appetite
  • trouble sleeping
  • fatigue

Stress and anxiety can cause mental or emotional symptoms in addition to physical ones, including:

  • feelings of impending doom
  • panic or nervousness, especially in social settings
  • difficulty concentrating
  • irrational anger
  • restlessness


There are many ways of combatting stress and anxiety by taking some very simple steps that you can do yourself, such as breathing exercises.
