We provide a safe refuge and a hot lunch to the homeless and vulnerable in Sheffield City Centre

General Volunteer

05 Jan 2022 - 31 Dec 2026

Volunteering for the Sunday sessions at the moment involves serving hot meals to Sheffield's homeless population, filling takeaway bags (we provide each guest with a takeaway bag filled with a hot meal, boxed drink, biscuits, choc treat, banana, and bread and butter), handing the bags out, litter picking and interacting with guests, wiping down/sweeping up afterwards. There is no obligation however, for you to do any role which you do not wish to. All relevant training and guidance is provided.

Overview of Project

Our guests are Sheffield's homeless, rootless, marginalised and anyone in need. Our user group is diverse and includes not only local homeless and other people in need but also refugees, asylum seekers, and new arrivals in the city. We cater for up to 100 (and occasionally up to 150) guests each Sunday. We are not a project that is set up to do one to one work but if we can advise or signpost, we do.

Our user group is diverse and includes not only local homeless and other people in need but also refugees, asylum seekers, and new arrivals in the city. We cater for up to 150 guests each Sunday. Volunteering for the Sunday sessions involves filling takeaway bags (we provide each guest with a takeaway bag filled with a boxed drink, biscuits, choc treat, banana, and bread and butter) and then serving our guests, at the table, with a hot-meal and a takeaway bag. There is also time to interact with guests. Once the meal is over tasks include: litter picking, wiping down/sweeping up afterwards. All relevant training and guidance is provided When open, we start setting things up from 12:30pm so that everything is ready for when we open the doors for the guests at 1:30pm.We then stay open until about 3:00pm. After that we start clearing up, have a quick post-shift team briefing and we are usually away by 3:30pm. If you need to get off before then, though, that isn't a problem. An ability to actively listen is appreciated when talking with our guests.
