Intergenerational Cooking Day Volunteer - Grandma's Soup

Join Grandma’s Soup on a mission to reduce loneliness among older adults by bringing generations together through cooking and connection. Join fun, flexible cooking sessions where students and seniors make soup together, chat, and build real connections. Open to all students.

As a Cooking Day Volunteer, you will:

  • Take part in 2-hour cooking sessions, helping students and older adults prepare soup together.
  • Assist with light setup and clean-up before and after the session (very minimal).
  • Engage in warm conversation, support simple cooking tasks, and help build a welcoming, intergenerational atmosphere.
  • Share a bowl of self-made soup and contribute directly to reducing loneliness in local communities.

Time commitment: Fully flexible — join once, weekly, or whenever you’re free.
Location: Various Sheffield venues (details after sign-up).

Overview of Project

Grandma’s Soup is a student-led initiative dedicated to tackling loneliness among older people across the UK. By organising weekly activities in cities such as London, Sheffield, and Oxford, the project brings students and older adults together to prepare and share a simple bowl of soup. These gatherings create warm, relaxed, and meaningful social spaces where generations can connect, build friendships, and enjoy fun, cozy afternoons together.

This Role Involves

Join 2-hour intergenerational cooking sessions with older adults. Help with light setup and clean-up. Support simple soup-making tasks (no experience required). Engage in friendly conversation and help create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Contribute to building connections that reduce loneliness among older adults.

Location

Various Sheffield venues (details after sign-up) e.g. community centres or care homes

Skills/Experience Required

No specific skills or experience required — enthusiasm is most important. Friendly, patient and comfortable chatting with older adults. Enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds. Willing to help with light cooking tasks. Reliable and respectful.

Role Duration

Ongoing sessions run throughout the year — you can take part in a single event or join regularly, as often as suits you.

Training Information

No formal training is required. At each cooking day, a team member with a DBS check and health & safety certification will be present to support you.
