Your Overall Wellbeing

Your wellbeing starts with you. Although it's not always easy, there are some small things you can do that will improve your mental health and wellbeing. Here are some tips!

  • Establish a daily routine that encompasses healthy habits, from getting enough sleep to enjoying regular, balanced meals and fitting in regular, light exercise.
  • Staying connected with friends and trying new things can also be great for wellbeing. If you're looking for something new, check out our societies or activities/events page, or Team Hallam for social sport opportunities!
  • Take a break from social media. We've all been there, spending hours on the TikTok infinite scroll or doomscrolling through Twitter. While there's nothing actually wrong with spending some time on social media, excessive use has been linked to increased depression, anxiety, and lack of sleep. Giving yourself some time away from the screen has been shown to result in a positive change in mood, reduced anxiety, and a better sleep pattern.
  • Focus on yourself! It's very easy to get “burnt out”, or overwhelmed when juggling the millions of things life can throw at you, and people often forget to look after themselves. “Self-care” may be an overused term frequently coined by influencers, but really, it's about prioritizing taking care of yourself properly, giving yourself space and knowing when you need a break.

Of course, there is no magic bullet for mental health and wellbeing, and although these things can help, sometimes we need more support. Sheffield Hallam University has lots of support available via SHU Wellbeing.

You can also access support through the NHS Health and Wellbeing Service.
