OUR SOCIAL CALENDER - AUTUMN 2020
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all our face-to-face social events remain cancelled, but we are excited to hang out with you online!
During this weird time of social distancing it might feel especially isolating as postgrad research students, and that is what we in the postgrad society want to remedy. We are organising informal events where you can meet fellow MRes and PhD students and talk to likeminded students who get the postgrad experience. We are open for suggestion on types of events you would like us to put on, or smaller study group constellations that you think might be useful for yourself and others. Send us an email, tweet us on Twitter, come get involved, and help us improve the postgrad experience at SHU! :)
- We will continue to run our Weekly Focus Thursday via Twitter and Zoom from 1st October onwards. You can join us via Twitter or Zoom every Thursday 9:30-11:30 to work in 30 min blocks, have quick chats inbetween and feel productive and social all at once!
Next session is 1st of October, we will send out a link to all members.
- Welcome (back) PUB QUIZ 7 October 6-8 pm
Catch up with postgrad friends and make new ones, this year unfortunately not over pizza and prosseco but in a Zoom quiz to rule all zoom quizzes! Depending on how many join we are open for teams or individual players to engage in a fun and casual quiz of 4 rounds of themes, including :music, memes, idiot-questions, and the postgrad special: the imposter syndrom-round!
- Do you like the idea of a book club but have no time to read? Join our Pod-Club!
First meeting: 14th of October 5:30 - 6:30 pm - Read all about the event here: https://www.hallamstudentsunion.com/events/11578/4913/
Listening to podcasts can be a great way to broaden your knowledge and insight into a wide array of subjects, and let's face it, sometimes we are too tired to read one more thing, be it academic or fiction! So we are starting a Pod-Club, we will suggest a few podcasts, fiction and non-fiction in a poll on Twitter for you to vote on, then join us forthnightly for a Pod-Club-chat over zoom!
Time and date for the first session is still to be confirmed. But please let us know if you are interested in joining this club!
- This autumn we are also planning a Virtual Question Wine!
Last autum we had a live event and it was a great time for some stimulating discussion over a glass of wine and cheese, very classy. This year we are proposing taking this event online. The structure is 4 topics that we can discuss either in smaller break out rooms or as a big group.
More info on time and date to follow shortly.

We are looking for nominees for the role of President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Equality & Diversity officer and we are also happy to include more committee members to have an as diverse-as-possible committee that represents as many postgrad students as possible!

The Postgraduate Research Students' Society organises monthly socials for current and prospective postgraduate students at SHU. Through a diverse range of events including walks in the Peak District, pub quiz socials, and a day trips to places such as York and Liverpool, we have established a community in which postgraduate students' can meet up with like minded people, share ideas and concerns, and enjoy some time out from academic life. We also organise the annual SHU Postgraduate Humanities Conference, which invites postgraduates from across Sheffield Hallam and other universities to present their research.
