Our rehearsals are Thursdays 7-9pm at the HUBS, every week during semester! We aim to be playing by 7 so arrive a few minutes early. If you are interested in joining, come along and see us - get in touch if you're unsure where to go or would like to ask any questions!
SHSU Band is a concert band made up of friendly and enthusiastic musicians who play various styles of music such as film soundtracks, musical theatre and other popular music, as well as some classical and Jazz plus Christmas music when the winter comes around. We are a non-auditioned group and welcome anyone who plays an instrument, be it woodwind, brass, strings, percussion! It doesn’t matter what experience you have playing – whether you play very regularly or you haven’t played for years, we accommodate a range of different abilities.
Throughout the year we have frequent socials which include music-related activities, such as going to the pantomine. Non-music related socials may include other fun activities, for example, laser quest, meals out and film nights.
Of course, we do enjoy performing! We have a regular slot at the Kelham Island Christmas Market, collaborate with Harmonies for concerts both in the Students' Union and the wider community and have recently taken up busking to raise money for the band as well as for charitable causes. In March 2018, we also hosted the first Band Varsity, with a friendly competition against the University of Sheffield's Music Players' Society. This has now become an annual event and is something we look forward to each year!
We are excited to announce that we will be working with our new sponsor Elegance Music, bringing some great opportunities for SHSU Band and its members!
Our conductor is Jamie Hollings who has now been with us for a number of years and is always there to support players in the Band.
