Brief Description

Heeley City Farm identifies, confronts and addresses the problems of poverty, inequality, prejudice and lack of opportunity by supporting and promoting community regeneration and self-help within environmentally friendly and self-sustaining systems, using the background of a mini-farm, community gardens and related resources.

Heeley City Farm (www.heeleyfarm.org.uk), established in 1981, is an inner-city farm providing a range of integrated services and activities for the local and citywide community including employment, training, education, older peoples' activities, youthwork, play, heritage and 100,000 visitors - with organic gardens, farm and smaller animals, low-energy buildings, wind turbines, green waste management and much more.  We have an annual turnover approaching £1m

Areas you'll be helping with:

  • LDD (Learning Difficulties and Disabilities) and people with mental health issues:  working with members of our caring special needs team you will help deliver day opportunities and other services to young people and adults with varying disabilities in an integrated settings
  • Dementia: working with the innovative Heeley City Farm dementia team you will be providing activities for dementia sufferers, their carers friends and families at Heeley City Farm and at Care Homes throughout the city
  • Local food growing:  working with our expert food growers you will be growing organic vegetables, herbs and fruit at one or more of the Heeley City Farm gardens:  Heeley City Farm, Norfolk Park Community Food Growing Garden, Meersbrook Park Walled Garden, Firth Park Community allotment and the magnificent Wortley Hall Walled Garden.  Or helping with our composting project at Heeley City Farm
  • South Yorkshire Energy Centre (www.syec.co.uk):  you will help our friendly fuel poverty and affordable warmth team in identifying and supporting individuals, groups and communities suffering from fuel poverty and not able to afford proper heating.  We provide advice at South Yorkshire Energy Centre, to groups and organisations and to individuals in their homes  throughout Sheffield
  • Landscaping and grounds maintenance:  working with our skilled landscaping team you will erect fences, build walls, create new gardens, skin polytunnels, build new aviaries and join in any of our construction projects at Heeley City Farm or any of our other food growing sites
  • Heeley City Farm Farm Kitchen Café: you will help our brilliant chefs prepare delicious vegetarian and vegan food (and clear, clean and wash up after the satisfied customers)
  • Garden Centre:  you will work with our exciting Garden Centre team to propagate, prepare, display and sell plants (flowers, herbs, vegetables etc.)

For some activities participants will need to undertake a DBS (Disclosure and Baring Service) check.
