Decolonising the Curriculum Campaign of Sheffield Hallam University - #SHUDECOLMOVEMENT

Overview

This is a campaign aimed at being intentional about the movement of decolonisation of curriculum by raising more awareness, establishing new platforms, and strengthening voices within Sheffield Hallam University.

#SHUDECOLMOVEMENT is a campaign supported by the National Union of Students with the face of Becky Olubunmi Deinde, the BME Student Rep of Sheffield Hallam University as the lead.

The campaign aims to use the office of all 2021/2022 student union officers and staff to enhance capacity for this campaign.

The campaign aims to use platforms like the BME mentoring and ambassador scheme, Hallam Race Network, Academic Development and Diversity Team, University Race Equity Forum and colleges minoritized group to expand the horizon of changes and strong structures.

Objectives

  • Creating an inclusive reading list and increased awareness of books by black authors and promoting their inclusion within the curriculum
  • Promoting sense of belonging through invitations of guest of colors to various departments and colleges during class and programs
  • Establishing storytelling platforms amongst students to strengthen the confidence of other students of color in achieving academic success
  • Execute development trainings on individual roles in decolonisation
  • Identifying the structures within Sheffield Hallam which may reproduce racism and educational inequality, seeking to close the BAME Attainment Gap
  • Sharing relevant opportunities useful for academic advantage and success of students of colour

  • Invite a guest or speaker of colour alongside other speakers to your event and share the success stories via the provided email
  • Help to run and raise awareness of the campaign either independently or through partnerships
