Black History Month

What is Black History Month and why is it important?

Black History Month is a national awareness month acknowledging the systemic oppression faced by Black people in Britain, it also works to celebrate different cultures and campaigns to improve current issues that disproportionately impact Black students. The theme for this year is "Time for change: actions not words". The month runs throughout the entirety of October.

Latest Updates

15th September Update

We've got a lot of activity planned for this month!

We want to make sure all of our events properly reflect the experiences of Black students at Hallam, which is why all of our events are linked to the Degree awarding gap. The degree awarding gap is wider at Hallam than most the country, this means Black students are being disproportionately impacted in their studies to achieve worse degree results than White students due to institiutional & systemic racism. The gap is created due to a number of factors, a lot of which Hallam Students' Union cannot impact, but we have identified the factors we can influence and we're keen to take action.

Capital is an important aspect of anyone's journey through their degree, this includes social capital, navigational capital, familial capital, linguistuic capital, cultural capital & aspirational capital. We have combined these factors, alongside student feedback & collaboration from our Officer team to make sure our events fully cater to Black students at Hallam.
