GEW at SHU 2015

Featured

Last Week we celebrated the national event that was Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), an annual celebration of the innovators that help to drive economic growth.

Sheffield Hallam Students' Union teamed up with the University Enterprise Team to put on a programme of events to inspire Hallam students and to get you thinking about entrepreneurship as an alternative career path.

There were a wide range of interactive events/activities put on throughout the week such as the Handmade Craft Fair, The Pitch, the Social Enterprise Social and even a student led Photography workshop led by Photography student Stefan Nedelcu to name a few.

At the Pitch on Wednesday, 3 students, Obinna, Mariam and Vanda pitched their social enterprise ideas to a panel of judges. The judges voted Obinna's idea to help disadvantaged children in Nigeria to be the winner. Well done to the other two candidates who both gave great pitches. At the Pitch students also had the opportunity to pitch themselves. Well done to Joe, Chris and Cameron who won the £50, £30 and £20 prize respectively.

The Photography workshop which Hallam student, Stefan, ran was also on the Wednesday. More information about this workshop can be found here.

The Social Enterprise Social was held on the Thursday. The event was very well attended with a room full of people who were keen to attend the event to learn more about social enterprise. Among the speakers at this event were the founders of Sheffield Live talking about how they started as a small community radio station and how they have grown to become the large and successful enterprise they are today. They also spoke about challenges they faced and how they overcame them.

All in all this year's GEW was a success. Any event through which we get to interact with as many of you as possible always is!

Don't forget we hold a range of activities and events relating to social enterprise all year round. If you want to start up as social enterprise or just want to learn more about it then don't hesitate to email Claire Collister (c.collister@shu.ac.uk) at the Students' Union.
