5 things you should tell your Course Rep (and one you shouldn't!)
1. Timetable Trouble
If you're struggling to get between lectures due to timetabling clashes, let your Course Rep know! They should have heard if other students are having similar problems and raise the issue with staff. Whilst they might not be able to change the room allocation, they can make tutors aware of why you might be a little late and they may be able to start their session a little later to accommodate.
2. Assessment Assistance
It can be frustrating if you're not sure what you are supposed to be doing with an assessment. If you feel it could be better explained, the marking critieria isn't clear or if you need more support from staff then let your Course Rep know! It could be that staff just didn't realise how difficult students are finding the assessment so passing the message on might be all that's needed to feel more confident - which is always good!
3. Blackboard Bother
If you need to miss a lecture for whatever reason, it can be quite annoying when what you need to catch up isn't available to you. This is a perfect issue to bring to Course Reps. It's a simple problem to fix and once the lecture slides or seminar prep is up there then you can catch up or revise past material to your hearts content!
4. Placement Problems
You should feel supported by staff so that you can ensure you end up at the best placement for you. Mentioning to Course Reps any uncertainties you have regarding your placements can work to highlight if many students are having similar issues! Your Course Rep will pass these concerns onto staff who will do their best to help you out.
5. You're Enjoying Yourself!
Whilst Course Reps want to hear what issues you're having on your course and how it could be improved, they also want to hear what you're enjoying! If you love a certain lecture or you think an assessment was clearly explained, let your Course Rep know! Staff love to know if you're happy with the course they're delivering and there's always the chance in every meeting for Reps to pass on your praises.
6. And One You Shouldn't...Personal Issues
There are people in both the University and the Union trained to support you through any personal problems you might be having at University. Get in touch with either the
Students' Union Advice Centre
or your Student Support Officer. Your Course Rep might direct you to either of these services if you ask for support with certain issues as there you'll find people better trained to help you out!
