What is a service level agreement?

This is a set of terms and conditions regarding the responsibilities we both have towards students as volunteers. It is crucial that we both agree to follow these terms to ensure that we give students the best experience and follow relevant legislation. Click here to read the full agreement.

Does it cost anything to advertise with you?

Sheffield Hallam Student's Union is a not-for-profit organisation and advertising your opportunity with us is completely free.

When are students able to volunteer?

Generally, students do not always spend the whole year in Sheffield. Therefore, we recommend that you make your opportunities as flexible as possible. If there is a strict time commitment from the start, then please be as transparent as possible. You can find the University Term Dates here: http://www.shu.ac.uk/_assets/pdf/AcademicCalendar1415.pdf

When is the 'best time' to recruit student volunteers?

We receive the most enquiries from students wishing to volunteer at the start of each term (October and February).  If you are hoping to recruit a large number of volunteers, this would be the best time.

Do you run recruitment fairs?

Yes - we have a Volunteer Fair in Welcome Week. We will also be running smaller scale recruitment fairs in specific departments in February. These will be tailored to students on specific course. All of our partners will be invited to the fair and places will be allocated on a first-come-first served basis.

What opportunities do you not advertise?

One of the key values of Volunteering at Sheffield Hallam is that our students are offered worthwhile, rewarding opportunities that fit alongside their studies. For this reason, we do not advertise a number of roles, for example stuffing envelopes or work which was previously paid work.
We also do not promote bucket collections as this overlaps with our Raise and Give (RAG) society. If you are wishing to advertise any fundraising opportunities, it may be worthwhile contacting us before you register to see if it is suitable.

What kind of volunteering do students want to take part in?

Students respond well to roles that give them a sense of purpose and develop their skills. The most popular opportunities are those that provide students with the opportunity to work with children or vulnerable people and opportunities relating to business ,marketing, art or nutrition. However, there is a level of interest across a wide variety of areas.

Is there a limit to how many roles I can advertise?

No. You can advertise as many opportunities as you wish. However, each opportunity will have to be approved so this may mean that there is a slight delay in processing your roles.
