After school book club volunteer

The first After School Book Club meet up with be on Wednesday 6th November at 3.30 – 4.30pm in Coffee Union in The HUBs, Everyone is welcome and this is a great chance to find out more about the project.

Would you like to help primary school children develop their confidence in reading and love of books? As a small team, you will run 6 fun sessions to support Y5 pupils in after school book clubs (3: 30 - 4:30pm.)


These sessions will involve:

  • Children reading aloud

  • Discussing the text 

  • Interactive activities such as writing a newspaper article or a book review

  • Gaining experience of planning and delivering sessions


Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham or Doncaster

Hours per week

1 hour sessions + 1-2 hours travel and 1hours planning.

Training information

Training will be given on how to deliver the sessions, classroom management training. There will also be health and safety and safeguarding training.

DBS required?

Yes (We can arrange this free of charge.)

Benefits to self

A teacher will be present at each session, meaning this is great opportunity to practice your delivery and classroom management skills with full support. You will gain skills in classroom management, presentation skills, engaging children, liaison and co-working with other volunteers and teachers and the evaluation of a project.

Skills/Experience required

We are looking for confident, enthusiastic people who enjoy working with young people. Experience of the delivery of activities for children is desirable, but not essential.

Expenses information

Travel expenses will be reimbursed. We will pay for volunteers to travel to and from the schools by train, bus and taxi as required. Wherever possible, this will be pre-purchased by SHU staff.
