Activities Officer

The Activities Officer supports the exciting groups and opportunities the Union has to offer. They look after Volunteering groups, Societies, student fundraising and the Media. They help new groups get started, and make sure existing ones deliver the best opportunities to Hallam students.

Activities Officer

The Role:

The Activities Officer has the opportunity to enhance the student experience through developing and supporting extra-curricular activities available at Sheffield Hallam Students' Union.

The Activities Officer is responsible for:

  • Societies and student led activities
  • Volunteers and volunteering
  • Fundraising opportunities
  • Student Media

The Activities Officer acts as:

  • The lead officer for the promotion and development of societies and student led events and activities for the Students’ Union.
  • The lead officer to support volunteers at Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union.
  • A Trustee of the Students’ Union.

All the main duties and responsibilities of the Activities Officer include:

  • To attend Representative Committee, the Trustee Board, Students’ Union Council, Annual General Meeting and any other relevant meetings.
  • To ensure that all societies operate a model constitution in accordance with the policies of the Students’ Union, including financial procedures.
  • To encourage and promote student led events.
  • To be the lead officer for fundraising at Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union.
  • Any other duties and responsibilities as agreed with the Representative Committee.

Education Officer

Your Education Officer represents students' academic interests within the University. They work closely with a range of student groups to find out what issues they face in their academic life. From teaching to assessment, exam stress to study space, the Education Officer represent students to change and improve life at Sheffield Hallam.

The Role:

The Education Officer works closely with a range of student groups to find out what issues they face in their academic life. From teaching to assessment, exam stress to study space - represent students to change and improve life at Sheffield Hallam.

The Education Officer is responsible for:

  • Representing the learner voice to the University, the local community and nationally.
  • NSS and student surveys.
  • QAA.
  • Employability.
  • Educational campaigns.
  • All education and academic matters that affect students including:

- Timetabling

- Placements

- Student reps/faculty reps

The Education Officer acts as:

  • The lead officer for local and national educational and academic issues within the Students’ Union and the University Community.
  • A Trustee of the Students’ Union.

All the main duties and responsibilities of the Education Officer include:

  • To attend meetings of the Trustee Board, Representative Committee, Students’ Union Council, Annual General Meeting, and any other relevant meetings.
  • To take the lead in promoting the learner voice to the University, the local community and nationally
  • To assist with the co-ordination and training of the student rep system.
  • To work with Advice Centre staff and student reps to support students with issues affecting their academic life.
  • To co-ordinate and publicise the Students’ Union’s priority campaigns on academic related matters.
  • To encourage student involvement and engagement throughout the University by liaising with faculties and departments.
  • To work alongside and in partnership with Academic Reps.
  • Any other reasonable duties and responsibilities as agreed with the Representative Committee.

President

The President leads the Students' Union, making sure students have the best possible time at University. As well as leading the officer team, the President sits on the highest governing boards of the University, and makes sure the student voice is heard.

The Role:

The President is the student leader within Sheffield Hallam Students' Union. They sit on the highest governing boards within the university and have a real opportunity to affect change. 

The President is responsible for:

  • Student representation within the student body, to the University and to various local and national bodies.
  • The effective performance and functioning of the Students' Union governance and democratic structures.
  • Leading the Elected Officer Team and Students’ Union Reps to ensure they are effectively supported and empowered to represent their members, including ensuring that issues raised by College Officers are escalated where appropriate.
  • Leadership and support for non-academic student groups and societies.

The President acts as:

  • Trustee of the Students’ Union and Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees.
  • The figurehead of the Students' Union and lead representative of students to the University, including being a member of the University Board of Governors.
  • The lead officer for the development, implementation and monitoring of the Students’ Union’s strategic and financial plans.
  • The main point of contact for the Board of Governors, NUS and the Media.

All the main duties and responsibilities of the President include:

  • To attend meetings of the Trustee Board, Union Council, Annual General Meeting and any other relevant Students' Union meetings.
  • To attend University Committee meetings as required to effectively represent the interests of Sheffield Hallam students.
  • To represent Sheffield Hallam students as a member of the University Board of Governors, and to appoint a second Student Governor from amongst the Elected Officers.
  • To act as Deputy Chair of the Trustee Board and to Chair the Representative Committee.
  • To ensure that the requirements of these Articles of Governance are upheld, and to bring recommendations to the Union Council for ensuring that both these Articles of Governance and all policies are maintained and implemented.
  • To be the lead officer on the development, implementation and monitoring of the Students' Union strategic plan(s).
  • To be the lead officer in ensuring that the Students' Union is operating in an environmentally sustainable way.
  • To lead the delegation from the Students' Union to Annual and Extraordinary NUS Conferences so long as Sheffield Hallam Students' Union is an affiliate member of the NUS.
  • To work with Elected Officers to ensure objectives and plans are identified and that appropriate support is in place to ensure they can achieve their goals.
  • To take responsibility for the running of Students' Union priority campaigns.

Any other reasonable duties and responsibilities as agreed with Union Council.

Sports and Physical Activities Officer

The Sports and Physical Activities Officer is the student representative for all Sheffield Hallam sports clubs and individuals. They lead the many sports groups on campus, and oversee the delivery of major sporting events such as Varsity.

The Sports & Physical Activity Officer acts as:

  • The lead officer for the promotion and development of sporting opportunities for students
  • The lead officer for the development and implementation of the Students’ Union’s sports strategy
  • A Trustee of the Students’ Union

All the main duties and responsibilities of the Sports & Physical Activity Officer include:

  • To attend meetings of the Representative Committee, the Trustee Board, Students’ Union Council, Annual General Meeting and any other relevant meetings.
  • To be the lead officer for Varsity for the Students’ Union
  • To promote the development, coordination and training of clubs
  • To ensure that all Sports activities operate in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Students’ Union
  • To ensure that all clubs operate a model constitution in accordance with the policies of the Students’ Union including financial procedures
  • To ensure the effective organisation of British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) fixtures and any other student competitions
  • Any other reasonable duties and responsibilities as agreed with the Representative Committee

Welfare and Community Officer

The Welfare and Community Officer is there to make sure students feel safe, supported and part of a community while studying at Sheffield Hallam University. They lead on campaigns around issues as diverse as housing, student finance and health and work on projects with the University and the Council.

  • Advice liaison
  • Ethical and environmental issues

The Welfare & Community Officer acts as:

  • The lead officer for the Students’ Union’s community strategy
  • The lead officer for student safety and wellbeing
  • The lead officer for student campaigns
  • A Trustee of the Students’ Union

All the main duties and responsibilities of the Welfare & Community Officer include:

  • To attend Representative Committee, the Trustee Board, Students’ Union Council, Annual General Meeting and any other relevant meetings.
  • To lead on, co-ordinate and publicise relevant Students’ Union campaigns.
  • To be the lead officer for the development and implementation of the Students' Union’s community strategy.
  • To develop links and work in partnership with key stakeholders in the University, the local community and the local authority.
  • To be the responsible officer and support for Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union’s Liberation Groups.
  • To be the lead officer for and coordinate Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union’s campaigning activity for student safety and wellbeing.

Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Students' Rep

The BME Rep is the primary representative for Black and Minority Ethnic Students, and has the job of making sure the Union and University is more inclusive.

In this role you can play a part in shaping and directing policy, and you can run campaigns on issues relating to BME students, such as closing the attainment gap, coordinating our support for Black Lives Matter, and/or any other issues you feel are important. It's a chance to positively influence the experience of BME students at Hallam, inspire others, and gain valuable professoinal development opportunities.

You will be required to attend Union Council (3-4 meetings per year) and Rep Committee meetings (approx. 1 meeting per month), where you will be the voice of BME students, ensuring their views and perspectives are heard.

Training will be provided, and there is a dedicated staff team who will support you throughout your time as a rep.

International Students' Officer

The International Students Rep makes sure the Students' Union and the University provide an excellent student experience for the over 4,000 international students studying here.

The Role:

The International Students' Officer is the primary representative of international students' within Sheffield Hallam Students' Union. They sit on committees within the University and Students' Union and have a real opportunity to make change.

The International Students' Officer is responsible for:

  • Student representation within the University on issues relating to international students and opportunities for UK students to engage in global activities.
  • Supporting and leading cultural societies and committees.
  • Increasing engagement within the Students' Union for international students.

The International Students' Officer acts as:

  • A Trustee of the Students’ Union and member of Union Council.
  • The lead officer for the representation of international students at University level and for ensuring the Students' Union and University retain a global outlook.
  • A key representative of students to the University and local community, including membership of relevant committees.

All the main duties and responsibilities of the International Students' Officer include:

  • To attend meetings of the Trustee Board, Union Council, Annual General Meeting and any other relevant Students' Union meetings.
  • To attend University Committee meetings as required to effectively represent the interests of Sheffield Hallam students.
  • To ensure that the requirements of the Articles of Governance are upheld and utilised to build engagement with students.
  • To ensure the Students' Union and University provide an excellent experience for International Students.
  • To be the lead officer on University groups and initiatives relating to global engagement and International students.
  • To support International Student groups in their integration into the Students' Union and University and to lead campaigns on issues relating to international students and global engagement.
  • To support International and Cultural Societies and to enhance engagement within the Students' Union from overseas students.
  • Responsible for ensuring the University provides opportunities and home and international students to participate as global citizens.
  • Any other reasonable duties and responsibilities as agreed with Union Council.

LGBT+ Students' Rep

The LGBT* Students Rep makes sure that LGBT* students feel supported, included and represented at Sheffield Hallam University.

In this role you can play a part in shaping and directing policy, and run events/campaigns on issues relating to LGBT+ students. Past reps have led our LGBT+ History Month campaign, coordinated student responses to the Gender Recognition Act consultation and run social events to bring LGBT+ students together.

You will Chair the LGBT+ Committee, who will be able to help you deliver your projects. You will  also provide insight and guidance to Students' Union staff, societies, clubs and committees on issues relating to LGBT+ students, like increasing accessibility and improving support services.

You will be required to attend Union Council (3-4 meetings per year) and Rep Committee meetings (approx. 1 meeting per month), where you will be the voice of LGBT+ students, ensuring their views and perspectives are heard.

Training will be provided, and there is a dedicated staff team who will support you throughout your time as a rep.

Union Council Chair

Union Council is the highest decision making body in the Students' Union. The Union Council Chair facilitates its meetings, ensuring policy is discussed and decided fairly.

As Union Council Chair, you will hold elected officers and representatives to account and ensure the Union delivers on its policy commitments. You will chair meetings of the Students' Unions highest decision making body, and will be a key member of the representative team. You will need to remain impartial and be able to chair complex issues neutrally, being a voice of reason and fairness on all matters.

Womens' Rep

The Women's Rep is the primary representative for women students studying at Sheffield Hallam University. They work to ensure women's interests are properly represented on campus both within the Union and the University.

In this role you can play a part in shaping and directing policy, and run events/campaigns on issues relating to women students. Past reps have led our Women's History Month campaign, coordinated the Take Back the Night event, introduced policy on implementing consent education on campus, and campaigned to make Hallam more period positive. You could continue work on these projects and/or start something completely new - whatever you think is important.

Faculty Academic Rep - Social Sciences and Humanities

You're the primary representative for students in your Faculty, helping to shape and influence the Union and the University and make sure it fits the needs of your students. You'll get the chance to lead on projects and campaigns, as well as sitting on high level meetings throughout the University.

Working with Course and Department Reps, you'll ensure that students in Development and Society have a voice within the Students' Union and the University. As a full member of rep committee and Union Council, you'll have a budget to run events and campaigns that benefit students in your Faculty and play a part in cross organisational campaigns.

Part Time Students' Rep

As Part Time Students Rep, you'll be making sure that Part Time students are represented within the Union and the University.

Whether it's by running projects to make sure that activities and support is accessible to students, campaigning for reduced travel costs, or simply providing a voice for Part Time students, you'll be making a big difference in this role.

In this role you can play a part in shaping and directing policy, and run events/campaigns on issues relating to part-time students. Past reps have worked to reduce travel costs for commuting students, increase digital access to Union services to make them more accessible to students who are rarely on campus, and to develop a social community for part-time students. You could continue working on these issues, and/or start brand new projects - whatever you think is important for improving the experience of part-time students.

You will also provide insight and guidance to Students' Union staff, societies, clubs and committees on issues relating to part-time students, like increasing accessibility and improving support services.

You will be required to attend Union Council (3-4 meetings per year) and Rep Committee meetings (approx. 1 meeting per month), where you will be the voice of part-time students, ensuring their views and perspectives are heard. We try to make these as accessible as possible in terms of scheduling and options for video calling in if attending in person is not possible.

Training will be provided, and there is a dedicated staff team who will support you throughout your time as a rep.

The Postgraduate Students Rep works with Full Time Officers to make sure the Students' Union and the University provide a brilliant experience to our 7,000 postgraduate students.

Disabled Students' Rep

As Disabled Students Rep, you'll be providing the voice for students at Hallam with a disability. You'll be working to make sure that the Union and the University do as much as they can to ensure their activities and services are accessible and inclusive. You'll campaign, set policy and work on projects throughout the institution.

The Disabled Students' Rep is the main representative of students who identify as Disabled at Sheffield Hallam. They lead on campaigns and projects aimed at improving the lives of Disabled students, within the Union, the University, and beyond.

You'll have the power and resource to run events and campaigns, or influence policy change. Previous reps have worked to coordinate Hallam's celebration of Disability History Month and raise awareness of challenges faced by Disabled students - you could continue work on these or any other issues you think are important.

You will be required to attend Union Council (3-4 meetings per year) and Rep Committee meetings (approx. 1 meeting per month), where you will be the voice of students who identify as Disabled, ensuring their views and perspectives are heard.

Training will be provided, and there is a dedicated staff team who will support you throughout your time as a rep.
